Hello!
I am working at the Plympton summer program (and we are having fun!). This week I stayed late to get new books ready for the library. One of the coolest picture books I saw was called The Black Book of Colors by Menena Cottin. Every page in this book is entirely black with gray lines showing pictures--there are no colors at all. BUT, the book is all about colors! This book tells what colors sound like to people who cannot see. The text is written and provided in Braille. By listening to descriptions of the different colors, you have to use your imagination to "see them". It was a really interesting way to think about seeing. How would you describe something like a color to someone who cannot see at all?
We've also been doing lots of research on ocean creatures in the summer program. I love the facts you find in nonfiction books for kids. For instance, this week, I learned that scallops are the fastest moving bivalves of all and can zigzag quickly through the water and even jump off ships if they are caught by fishermen. Who knew? I have a new regard for these "sea shells."
Have a great week!

of secerets.
WOW--that is a lot of reading for one kid! I hope you are enjoying them. It is a new idea to me that you can read all the Harry Potter books in a row. I hope your summer is going well.
ReplyDeleteHi Ms. Paradis, Nick and Anna here. We started out summer reading some new books, Nick reading The 39 Clues: Maze of Bones, and Anna reading the Ivy and Bean series. Nick found the 39 Clues books a little creepy, and decided to put them aside for when he's a little older. Then we started reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which was a load of fun!! Now we are reading James and the Giant Peach and getting ready for a road trip to Hershey Park. Nick has also been reading some nonfiction books from WPL about Henry VIII, Marco Polo, and Spain. Anna started the Ramona books, but is also keeping up her current obsession with Rainbow Magic Fairy books. Hope your summer is going great!

ReplyDeleteHello Perezes!
ReplyDeleteI am glad to hear you are finding good things to read. I haven't read any 39 Clues books yet, but I know they are written for middle school kids--so Nick has plenty of time for these. Tell Anna that Ramona was my favorite character MANY years ago and I still love her. I hope your trip to Pennsylvania goes well!

Hi Sydney,
ReplyDeleteThanks for letting me know about this author--I had not heard of her before and I will see if I can add some of her books to our library. Kids always seem to read any book that has a ghost in it! I am going to see Ms. Lenza this week to hear all about her trip to SCOTLAND last month. I should let her know that she is not the only fan of that country at Plympton School. have fun dancing and reading!!
